With its charming and busy atmosphere, many points of historical interest and attractive rural surroundings, the town of Guildford is a popular tourist destination.

Some of the south of England's finest historic houses and buildings are situated in the Guildford area, from the town's oldest surviving building - St Mary's church, which dates back to the eleventh century - to the beautiful Elizabethan Guildhall in the centre of town.

One particularly striking example of the town's heritage is the impressive Norman-style Guildford Castle, which was built by William the Conqueror after he held he town in the years following the Battle of Hastings. Designed as an imposing reminder to the locals of the new king's authority, the castle was restored in Victorian times and then again in the last decade and it is now a stunning sight amid well maintained public gardens.

The seventeenth century Abbot's Hospital building is also well worth a visit, with its beautiful Chapel, large communal hall and a selection of fine stained-glass windows and antique furniture. On the outskirts of town lies Loseley Park - a stunning manor house that is surrounded by glorious parkland and tranquil flower and herb gardens.

Shoppers flock to Guildford year-round as a result of its friendly, bustling atmosphere and some of the best and most varied retail areas in the south of England. The High Street has a traditional feel due to the historic architecture all around and its selection of independent boutiques, not to mention its range of popular street cafes and restaurants, make for a unique shopping experience.
